Chapter 10 - The Bottom Tier
The pastry chef noticed the lowest decorative tier was heavier than it should have been.
It was not cake.
It was a locked presentation box disguised to match the white icing above it.
The employee council authorized it to be opened.
Inside were original ownership certificates, payroll deductions and Emma’s missing will.
The documents proved hotel workers owned not only the apartment buildings.
Their trust held forty percent of the Chicago hotel itself.
For thirty-five years, the Lakeshore family had collected profits on shares that legally belonged to employees.
Emma discovered the fraud.
Charles changed her will.
The version given to Daniel transferred her rights only to Lily.
The original version transferred half to Lily and half to the permanent employee trust.
Daniel looked toward Maya.
“My family hid your ownership inside our wedding cake.”
Maya answered quietly:
“Your family hid it inside our paychecks first.”
A final envelope lay beneath the will.
It contained Lily’s birth certificate.
Daniel opened it.
His face changed.
Emma was listed as the legal mother.
But an attached sealed adoption record identified another woman as Lily’s biological parent.
Claire.
The ballroom became completely silent.
Claire stared at the document.
“No.”
Margaret began crying.
At nineteen, Claire had given birth privately after a relationship with a young Lakeshore employee. Margaret told her the baby had died.
Instead, Emma adopted the child and promised to reveal the truth when Claire was no longer controlled by her family.
Claire slowly looked at Lily.
The little girl remained beside Maya, holding the bouquet Margaret had told her to hide.
“You’re my mother?” Lily asked.
Claire could not speak.
Daniel turned toward Margaret.
“You hid your own granddaughter under a cake because she didn’t fit the photographs.”
Margaret shook her head desperately.
“I was told Lily belonged to Emma.”
“You knew enough to control her shares.”
Then the freight elevator opened.
Charles Reed stood inside beside rows of employee archives.
He held Emma’s original medical file.
But he was not alone.
A man in a hotel maintenance uniform stood beside him.
Claire recognized him from a photograph Margaret had once burned.
Lily’s biological father.
Alive.
Charles looked toward the wedding party.
“Before Claire claims that child, she should know why Emma raised her.”
A pause.
“Lily’s father did not disappear.”
