THE CHILD UNDER THE CAKE / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - The Family Photos

Margaret claimed Lily had misunderstood.

“I told her the formal photographs were for immediate family.”

Daniel stared at her.

“She is my sister’s daughter.”

“She is your ward.”

The correction was cold and deliberate.

Lily’s mother, Emma, had died eighteen months earlier. Daniel became the child’s legal guardian and promised she would never be treated like temporary luggage passed between relatives.

Margaret had always smiled around Lily when Daniel was present.

Behind his back, she called the child difficult.

Too attached to hotel workers.

Too emotional.

Too ordinary for the family Claire was marrying into.

That afternoon, Margaret saw the ivory flower-girl dress Lily wore and asked who made it.

Maya had altered it by hand after the designer dress ordered for Lily never arrived.

Margaret called it homemade.

Not beautiful.

Not careful.

Homemade.

As though the labor made it shameful.

She replaced Lily in the formal photographs with the daughter of a wealthy hotel investor.

A child in a custom gown whose family was considering a seventy-million-dollar development partnership.

Daniel looked toward Claire.

“Did you know Lily was removed?”

Claire’s eyes filled with confusion.

“I knew your mother’s portrait was supposed to be carried instead.”

“My mother is dead.”

“Margaret said the photographs needed visual balance.”

Maya looked at the cake, the flowers and the chandeliers.

Everything had been balanced except the frightened child hidden beneath them.

Lily opened her bouquet.

Inside was a folded seating card.

Her name had been crossed out at the family table.

A new location had been written beside it.

Service dining room.

Margaret looked toward Maya.

“The staff agreed to watch her.”

Maya’s expression hardened.

“No one asked us.”

The wealthy woman had assumed employee kindness was another service included with the ballroom.

Then the hotel manager arrived carrying a sealed document found beside the service elevator.

It was an enrollment agreement for a residential school.

The student was Lily.

The start date was Monday morning.
