Chapter 8 - Emma’s Recording
“Once Daniel marries Claire, we can send Lily away quietly.”
The ballroom became silent.
Emma answered:
“She is a child, not a voting obstacle.”
Margaret replied:
“She controls property adults should manage.”
“You mean rich adults.”
A pause.
Then Margaret said:
“Hotel workers do not understand what valuable land requires.”
Maya watched the employees along the corridor.
They understood exactly what valuable land required.
Night shifts.
Damaged knees.
Missed holidays.
Paychecks reduced by contributions they were told would secure their future.
Emma’s recording continued.
“The employees purchased those buildings.”
Margaret laughed.
“They contributed wages. They did not create value.”
A banquet captain lowered his eyes.
His father helped rebuild the Chicago hotel after a fire.
A housekeeper standing near the ballroom doors had worked there longer than Claire had been alive.
Yet Margaret believed value began only when wealthy families placed their names on it.
The employee council convened immediately.
Workers joined from kitchens, laundry rooms, front desks and apartment buildings.
They voted to preserve the housing.
Reject outsourcing.
Demand permanent board seats.
And restore every employee ownership account with interest.
Daniel supported the measures.
Claire did too.
Margaret stood alone.
The votes passed.
For the first time, Lakeshore employees controlled fifty-one percent of the company they had saved.
Lily looked at Maya.
“Does that mean Grandma Margaret can’t send me away?”
Maya crouched beside her.
“No one gets to decide that without listening to you.”
Then Emma’s recording played one final sentence:
“Margaret is not the person who created the guardianship plan.”
