Chapter 5 - The Wedding Bill
The ballroom flowers came from employee money.
So did the orchestra.
The imported champagne.
The designer invitations.
Margaret’s private suite.
Even Claire’s wedding gown had been classified as a promotional expense for the proposed Lakeshore redevelopment.
A hotel server standing near the corridor lowered her tray.
Her retirement distribution had been delayed because the fund supposedly lacked liquidity.
A maintenance worker’s housing repair had been postponed.
A retired housekeeper had spent winter with unreliable heat.
Their money had been hanging above them in chandeliers and stitched into lace.
Daniel looked around the white-and-gold ballroom differently.
Luxury had become evidence.
“You charged workers for our wedding.”
Margaret remained composed.
“The ceremony was also an investor event.”
“No one told the employees.”
“They benefit when the company grows.”
Maya answered quietly.
“They are always promised future growth when someone rich wants their money today.”
Daniel turned toward Claire.
“Did you know?”
Her face crumpled.
“I knew my dress was being covered by the family company.”
“The employee fund is not family money.”
Margaret interrupted.
“Daniel, do not let a server explain your balance sheet to you.”
He looked at Maya’s uniform.
Then at the frightened child in her arms.
“She found Lily.”
“She found the key.”
“And she knew enough to ask where the money came from.”
He closed the folder.
“I signed the wedding budget.”
Maya looked at him.
“Yes.”
“I did not read the funding schedule.”
“No.”
The shame reached him.
Margaret had deceived him.
But his wealth made that deception easy.
He could sign without reading because he assumed the consequences would fall somewhere beyond the ballroom.
Daniel instructed the hotel to charge every wedding expense to his personal trust.
Employee overtime would be paid in full.
The housing repair reserve would be restored before any family dividend resumed.
