Chapter 1 - The Call Behind the Door

Rain struck the bedroom window as Marcus stood over Claire, demanding that she sign papers surrendering temporary custody of Lily.
Claire stayed on the floor beside the bed, crying but refusing to touch the folder.
From the closet, eight-year-old Lily whispered into a black phone, “My mom is scared. Please send help.”
Marcus had always treated Claire as an outsider because she came from a working-class Baltimore family while he belonged to the wealthy Harwood dynasty.
He said no judge would believe a woman with unpaid bills over a respected businessman.
When police lights washed across the curtains, Marcus froze.
Officers entered, separated him from Claire and found Lily unharmed but trembling.
Marcus called it a private disagreement.
Then the dispatcher replayed Lily’s call.
Before asking for police, the child had whispered, “He said Grandma paid him to make Mom look unstable.”

Claire looked at Marcus.
He lowered his eyes—but the custody papers carried her own signature.
