Chapter 2 - The Key Nobody Wanted Found
Elias caught Grant before he reached the hallway.
“Stay here,” he ordered, closing one hand around the estate manager’s arm.
Grant obeyed, but his jaw tightened.
Camille accused Nora of frightening everyone over a noise that could have come from the heating system.
Nora pointed to the cup fragments and a tiny white sock partly visible beneath the concealed door.
The kitchen fell silent.
Elias inserted the brass key into the hidden lock.
It did not turn at first.
Grant explained that the mechanism was old, but Nora saw fresh scratches around the keyhole and a thin smear of oil on the latch.
Someone had used it recently.
When the lock finally clicked, Camille stepped backward.
The heavy door opened into a narrow stone room lit by one weak ceiling bulb.
Seven-year-old Sophie Whitmore sat on the floor hugging a plush fox to her chest.
Her face was pale, her eyes were wet, and every breath ended in a painful cough.
Elias shouted his daughter’s name and rushed forward, but Nora stopped him long enough to assess the child.
She knelt, spoke gently, and took a turquoise breathing spacer from the medical pouch tied beneath her apron.
Sophie remained conscious and responsive, yet she trembled whenever Camille moved closer.
Nora guided her through two slow assisted breaths until the panic in her eyes began to fade.
Elias crouched beside them, devastated.
He had been told Sophie was spending the weekend with her grandmother in Beacon Hill.
Camille had personally confirmed the trip that morning.
When Elias asked who had locked the door, Sophie clung to his coat and stared past his shoulder.
“She told me not to make a sound,” the girl whispered.
Camille immediately asked, “Who, sweetheart?”
Sophie opened her mouth, but Grant knocked the breathing spacer from Nora’s hand and claimed it had slipped.
As everyone looked down, a phone began ringing inside the stone room.
