Chapter 8 - The Woman in Rebecca’s Coat
The woman wearing Rebecca’s coat was Nora’s mother, Evelyn Bennett.
Nora had been told Evelyn died eleven years earlier after a long illness.
Yet there she stood, older, thinner, and very much alive.
Nora’s first emotion was not joy.
It was humiliation.
She remembered working nights to pay hospital bills, leaving community college for two years, and carrying guilt because she believed she had failed to save her mother.
Now Evelyn admitted that the illness had been real, but the report of her death had been fabricated.
Rebecca had helped her disappear after both women uncovered evidence that the Whitmore Foundation was using caregiver agencies to hide illegal transfers.
Low-income employees were blamed whenever money vanished.
Their criminal records ruined their credibility, while executives kept the profits.
Evelyn had agreed to testify, but someone threatened Nora and her younger sister.
She entered witness protection arranged privately by Rebecca.
When Rebecca’s boat exploded, Evelyn assumed the same people had killed her and remained hidden.
Nora asked why she never sent a message.
Evelyn answered that the Whitmores controlled investigators, hospitals, and media contacts.
The explanation did not erase eleven years of grief.
Class injustice had stolen more than wages from Nora.
It had stolen her mother’s funeral, her education, and every birthday they might have shared.
Camille denied knowing Evelyn.
Grant insisted Camille had paid him to locate her.
Then Evelyn produced bank records showing the payments came from an account opened under Elias’s name.
Elias swore the signature was forged.
Nora wanted to believe him, but she remembered Rebecca’s warning: Elias would protect the family before the truth.
Sophie moved toward Evelyn and asked where her mother was.
Evelyn said Rebecca had survived the accident and had been hiding under a new identity.
She was supposed to testify that morning but disappeared from a federal safe house.
The last person recorded entering the building was Nora.
Security footage showed Nora wearing the same teal uniform and carrying the plush fox.
