Chapter 3 - The Caregiver They Called a Liar

The discovery of Nora’s number on Sophie’s phone changed the room instantly.
Camille seized the device and announced that the caregiver had clearly arranged the entire scene.
Grant supported her before Elias even asked a question.
He claimed Nora had spent weeks asking about the mansion’s concealed rooms and had once requested access to the family schedule.
Both statements contained pieces of truth twisted into something ugly.
Nora had asked about locked spaces because Sophie suffered from asthma and every caregiver needed to know emergency exits.
She had requested the schedule because no one bothered to tell her when the child was home.
But in a wealthy house, the person with the least power could be turned into the easiest suspect.
Camille said Nora must have lured Sophie into the room, planted the broken cup, and then staged a rescue to earn Elias’s gratitude.
Elias looked at Nora with uncertainty, and that look wounded her more than an accusation.
She had sat beside Sophie through fevers, school nightmares, and the first Christmas after the child’s mother died.
Camille had entered the family only eleven months earlier.
Yet Camille wore diamonds and belonged at charity galas, while Nora entered through the side door and signed for every meal she ate.
Sophie tried to defend her.
“Nora didn’t put me there,” she said.
Camille knelt and told the child she was confused from lack of air.
Then she demanded that Elias search Nora’s bag.
Inside, Grant found a second brass key wrapped in a napkin.
Nora had never seen it before.
The police were called.
By the time two officers arrived, Camille had transformed the rescue into a kidnapping attempt.
Nora stood in the grand kitchen while strangers discussed her debts, salary, and working-class neighborhood as though poverty itself proved motive.
Elias asked her to surrender her phone.
She did.
The call log showed thirteen outgoing calls to Sophie during the night.
Nora knew she had been asleep in her Dorchester apartment.
Then Sophie tugged Elias’s sleeve and whispered, “That isn’t the phone she used.”
Everyone turned toward her.

Sophie pointed at Grant’s jacket.
A second phone was vibrating inside his pocket.
