Chapter 7 - The Child They Used as Leverage
Nora, Elias, and the police followed the live signal through Boston traffic toward the harbor.
Camille’s car did not go to the family court facility listed in the order.
It entered a private underground garage beneath the Whitmore Foundation’s waterfront headquarters.
Grant carried Sophie inside while Camille spoke to someone on the phone.
The police hesitated to enter because the court order technically placed Sophie in Camille’s custody.
Nora watched legal privilege become a locked door.
A poor mother who drove a child somewhere unexpected would be stopped immediately.
A wealthy guardian with corporate attorneys received procedural caution.
Elias used his executive credentials to access the building.
They found Sophie in a conference room, physically safe but terrified, surrounded by trust documents and a video camera.
Camille claimed she was preparing the child for a formal statement.
Grant said Sophie needed to confirm that Nora had locked her in the room.
The purpose was clear.
They wanted a frightened seven-year-old to repeat a lie on camera, turning the victim into evidence against her rescuer.
Nora knelt beside Sophie and told her she did not have to say anything.
Camille accused Nora of coaching the child.
Then the plush-fox camera transmitted audio from the car ride.
Grant could be heard telling Sophie that Elias would lose his home if she refused to blame Nora.
Camille promised the girl she could see her mother again if she cooperated.
The officers finally moved to detain them.
But before handcuffs closed, Grant announced that Rebecca was not dead.
He claimed the sailing accident had been staged after she discovered the trust fraud.
Camille called him a liar.
Grant laughed and said she had been paying Rebecca to remain hidden.
Elias grabbed him and demanded proof.
Grant pointed toward a security monitor showing a woman entering the building from the harbor elevator.
She wore Rebecca’s blue coat.
Sophie ran toward the screen, crying, “Mommy!”
