Caroline’s grave was opened by court order.
The coffin contained sandbags and a sealed foundation file.
There was no body.
Victoria called the discovery a private family arrangement.
Maria produced invoices proving Victoria chose the ambulance, funeral home, and cremation provider, although no cremation certificate existed.
Caroline had survived the crash.
A private ambulance moved her to St. Agnes Recovery Center, funded by the Hale Foundation.
Doctors renamed her Jane Rowe and declared her too confused to contact family.
Lucas found her alive in a locked residential wing, conscious but heavily medicated.
Emily placed her palm against the glass partition.
Caroline placed hers opposite it.
For three years, the Hales had called a living mother dead because she possessed evidence against them.
Caroline could speak only a few words.
“Trust Maria.”
Then she looked at Lucas.
“You signed it.”
Her file contained permission for indefinite treatment.
Lucas’s digital signature appeared beneath it.
The date was the night he believed she had died.
