Chapter 4 - THE ASSISTANT THEY OWNED WITH FEAR.
Victor’s assistant, Rachel Monroe, had hidden inside the hotel control room.
Her confession played through the ballroom speakers while security searched the corridors.
Rachel said Victor ordered her to place the bracelet in Claire’s bag after Emma overheard him discussing a fraudulent charity account.
Emma had not entered the gala accidentally.
Her late mother once worked for the Hale Foundation.
Before she died, she left Claire a sealed envelope containing records from the organization’s youth housing program.
Victor believed Emma knew where the documents were.
He accused her of stealing the bracelet to justify searching both Claire and the child before they left the hotel.
Rachel admitted she obeyed because Victor threatened to cancel her daughter’s medical insurance.
The confession changed the room.
Guests who had watched Emma being struck now whispered about how shocking Victor’s behavior was.
Claire felt disgust rather than relief.
Their morality had arrived only after the powerful man looked vulnerable.
Victoria denied Rachel’s claims.
She said disgruntled employees often invented stories when their loyalty was questioned.
The words were polished, but the prejudice beneath them was clear.
Employees needed jobs.
Therefore, wealthy people assumed their testimony could be bought, dismissed, or replaced.
Claire asked Emma whether her mother had ever mentioned the Hale Foundation.
Emma nodded.
Her mother, Alicia Cole, had managed tenant records at a Hale-owned housing complex.
She lost her job after accusing the foundation of removing low-income families to make room for luxury apartments.
The official report called Alicia unstable.
Victor’s attorney called her allegations unverified.
Claire reached into the lining of Emma’s dress and removed a small sealed envelope sewn there by Alicia before her death.
Victor lunged toward it.
Claire stepped back.
Victoria’s face went pale.
Emma looked from the envelope to the people who had called her a liar.
“My mom said to open it only when someone tried to scare me.”
