Chapter 9 - THE FATHER WHO CALLED HER A THIEF.

Victor denied the birth certificate immediately.
He said Alicia had forged it to gain access to the Hale fortune.
The accusation followed the same pattern as every other defense.
When a poor woman produced evidence, the evidence became greed.
When a wealthy man produced a denial, the denial became dignity.
Bennett examined the document.
It had been filed privately through a hospital attorney connected to the Hale family.
Alicia and Victor had been involved before she discovered the housing fraud.
Victor ended the relationship when Victoria learned Alicia was pregnant.
He agreed to provide support only if Alicia kept his name off public records.
Alicia refused.
Victoria then arranged for a sealed replacement certificate listing no father.
Victor had spent eight years pretending Emma was a stranger while secretly monitoring her life.
The realization hurt more than the slap.
Emma did not ask why he had never visited.
She asked a smaller question.
“Did you know my birthday?”
Victor could not answer.
Claire held Emma’s hand as the child understood that blood did not automatically create love.
Victoria tried to use the revelation to regain control.
She said Emma was a Hale heir and therefore belonged under family protection.
Claire stepped between them.
“You don’t get to call control protection anymore.”
The original family trust granted shares to every legally acknowledged child of Victor.
If the birth certificate was authenticated, Emma would own a significant portion of the hotel and foundation assets.
Victor suddenly softened his voice.
He called Emma “sweetheart.”
The guests watched him transform from accuser to father in seconds.
Emma recognized the change.
He had not discovered affection.
He had discovered her voting power.
She moved closer to Claire.
Bennett requested immediate independent testing and temporary protection of Emma’s trust rights.
Victor objected until Rachel opened another message from his phone.
He had ordered the bracelet planted after learning the birth certificate might surface.
He had known exactly who Emma was when he struck her.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
A federal investigator entered with Alicia’s former attorney.
The attorney carried a sealed video statement.
Alicia had recorded it two days before her death.

Her first words were:
“If you are watching this, Victoria has already tried to take Emma.”
