Chapter 5 - THE ROOM WHERE THE RECORDS DISAPPEARED.
The old hotel key card opened an archival storage room connected to Victor’s former private suite.
According to the hotel manager, the room had been sealed after a renovation and removed from the current floor plan.
Victor insisted the card proved nothing.
Victoria demanded that the gala continue.
She told the guests they had gathered to support disadvantaged children, not to entertain accusations from people who had never belonged in the ballroom.
Emma stared at the woman’s diamonds.
The charity had used her photograph in fundraising brochures after her mother died.
They had told donors the Hale Foundation helped children like her.
They had never paid her family a dollar.
Claire asked the manager to open the archive.
He refused until Mr. Bennett, an elderly trustee of the hotel, stepped forward.
Bennett had served on the Hale Foundation board before resigning without explanation.
He still retained emergency authority over hotel records.
Victor called him senile.
Bennett answered calmly.
“You said the same thing about Alicia Cole.”
The archive contained old tenant files, relocation agreements, and boxes labeled for destruction.
Emma’s mother had copied payment records showing that federal housing funds were transferred into private development companies controlled by Victor.
Families were removed from their apartments, but the relocation money never reached them.
Victor had used the savings to renovate the hotel ballroom where he now hosted charity galas.
Claire looked at the marble floor beneath Emma’s shoes.
The child had been struck inside a room partly financed by money taken from families like hers.
Victoria defended the transfers as lawful redevelopment expenses.
Bennett produced board minutes proving the payments had never been approved.
Then Claire found Alicia’s personnel file.
A note signed by Victor ordered staff to describe her as emotionally unstable if she contacted journalists.
At the bottom was another instruction.
“Monitor the daughter.”
The date was six years earlier.
Victor had been watching Emma since she was two.
