Chapter 7 - THE SETTLEMENT WRITTEN FOR HER SILENCE.
The settlement offered Claire two hundred thousand dollars in exchange for surrendering Alicia’s records, withdrawing every accusation, and placing Emma in a Hale-funded boarding school.
The agreement described the arrangement as an educational opportunity.
In reality, it would separate Emma from Claire and place the child under the control of the same foundation that had monitored her for years.
Victor believed the amount would be irresistible to someone living in a rented apartment.
He had never understood that poor people could need money desperately and still refuse to sell one another.
Claire placed the agreement on the banquet table.
“You thought our fear had a price.”
Victoria corrected her.
“Everyone has a price.”
Emma looked at the dessert plates, flowers, and crystal glasses surrounding the document.
Her mother’s silence had been valued in legal fees.
Her home had been valued in redevelopment profit.
Her relationship with Claire had been valued at two hundred thousand dollars.
The people making those calculations called themselves philanthropists.
Rachel revealed that Victor used similar settlements against former tenants, employees, and women who challenged him.
Some accepted because they needed medicine, rent, or immigration attorneys.
Victoria called them voluntary agreements.
Claire called them choices made under threat.
Bennett requested an emergency vote of the foundation board.
Victor laughed.
He controlled enough donor proxies to defeat any motion.
Then the ballroom manager stepped forward with a locked metal case removed from the archive.
Alicia had stored the original tenant ledgers inside it.
The records showed that several major gala donors received private investment returns from the missing housing funds.
Their voting proxies were obtained through undisclosed financial benefits.
The board votes could be invalidated.
Guests who had ignored Emma’s tears began calling attorneys.
Victor grabbed Claire’s wrist and demanded the case.
Security finally moved toward him.
This time, they did not obey his orders.
They stood beside Claire.
Victoria accused them of betraying the family that paid their salaries.
The head of security answered, “The hotel pays us. Not you.”
Victor looked around the ballroom and realized the class hierarchy he had relied on was breaking.
Then Emma noticed something written inside the case lid.
