Chapter 1 - The Servant They Blamed First

The silver serving tray was still spinning on the polished walnut floor when Daniel Whitmore burst through the front doors of his Boston townhouse.

Cupcakes lay crushed beneath the dining-room archway, pale frosting smeared across the expensive wood, while nine-year-old Emma sat beside the mess with tears running down her cheeks.

Rosa Alvarez stood several feet away in her light-blue work shirt and tan apron, frozen between fear and disbelief.

Daniel rushed to his niece and asked whether she was hurt.

Emma shook her head, pointed toward Rosa and said, “Rosa knocked it over!”

The accusation changed the room instantly.

Daniel’s concern became anger.

His sister-in-law, Claire, and cousin, Preston, remained behind him, watching with expressions that suggested they had already reached a verdict.

Rosa tried to explain, but Daniel stepped between her and Emma.

“Then tell me the truth,” he demanded.

Rosa had worked for the Whitmore family for eleven years.

She had prepared Emma’s meals, stayed beside her during fevers and comforted her after the death of Daniel’s sister.

None of that mattered once a wealthy child pointed at a housekeeper.

Claire called Rosa careless and suggested that low-paid employees often became resentful when they saw how rich families lived.

Preston asked whether anything else had gone missing from the townhouse.

The fallen cupcakes were suddenly no longer an accident.

They had become evidence of Rosa’s character.

Rosa opened both hands and looked above the dining-room doorway.

“Please,” she said. “Check the camera.”

Everyone followed her gaze to the small white security dome.

Its red light was still glowing.

Daniel’s anger disappeared.

The camera had recorded everything.

Before he could open the security application, Emma grabbed his sleeve and whispered, “Uncle Daniel, please don’t watch it.”

Across the foyer, Claire quietly slipped a small remote control into her purse.
