Chapter 6 - The Death They Called an Accident
Margaret Whitmore’s death had been officially ruled an accidental medication interaction.
Daniel had accepted the conclusion because the family physician said she had become confused during the final months of her illness.
The security footage challenged everything he believed.
Preston entered Margaret’s room carrying a prescription bottle that did not appear on her medical list.
Claire followed several minutes later and removed papers from the locked drawer.
Neither had disclosed those visits.
Preston claimed he had delivered vitamins requested by Margaret.
Rosa examined the label and recognized the name of a private pharmacy used by Claire’s family.
Daniel called the physician, Dr. Howard Bell, who arrived with unusual speed for a late-night family dispute.
Bell inspected the footage and said there was no proof Margaret consumed anything from the bottle.
He described Rosa’s questions as irresponsible speculation by an untrained domestic worker.
Rosa reminded him that she had completed three years of nursing school before leaving to care for her father.
Bell smiled and said incomplete education did not qualify her to challenge a physician.
The insult reflected the same hierarchy that had protected Claire.
A rich doctor’s confidence outweighed a working woman’s direct experience.
Emma then remembered seeing Dr. Bell in the townhouse on the night her mother died.
The official timeline stated that he arrived after paramedics.
The child said he had been there much earlier, arguing with Margaret inside the dining room.
Bell called the memory unreliable.
Daniel asked why the security footage from that night had also been deleted.
Bell refused to answer and attempted to leave.
Rosa locked the front door and told him the police were already coming.
Claire accused her of unlawful detention.
Rosa replied that Claire had not worried about legality when threatening a child.
Daniel opened Margaret’s medical file.
Someone had altered the dosage instructions using his electronic authorization.
He had never approved the change.
The system recorded the device used to access his account.
It was Emma’s tablet.
The child began shaking.
She said Claire often borrowed it to help with “family paperwork.”
