Chapter 2 - A Child’s Lie, an Adult’s Fear
Daniel asked Emma why she did not want him to see the recording.
The child stared at the crushed cupcakes and said nothing.
Claire immediately stepped forward and claimed Emma was frightened because Rosa had threatened her after causing the accident.
Rosa denied it.
Claire responded that an employee would naturally deny mistreating the child who could get her fired.
The statement sounded logical only because the room had been trained to trust wealth over labor.
Daniel opened the security application on his phone.
The footage from the previous hour appeared, but the twelve minutes surrounding the accident were missing.
Claire gasped theatrically.
Preston said only someone familiar with the household system could have deleted the file.
Every face turned toward Rosa.
She had been given the camera password months earlier because Daniel frequently traveled and trusted her to monitor deliveries.
That trust now became evidence against her.
Rosa explained that the system automatically saved a second copy to cloud storage.
Daniel attempted to access it, but his account had been locked.
Claire demanded that Rosa surrender her phone and leave the property until the family completed an investigation.
Emma began crying harder.
Daniel interpreted the tears as fear of Rosa.
Rosa saw something different.
Emma looked terrified of Claire.
The housekeeper knelt several feet away and asked the child whether someone had told her what to say.
Claire ordered her not to speak directly to Emma.
Daniel hesitated, then told Rosa to collect her belongings.
The words humiliated her more than being shouted at would have.
He called the dismissal temporary, but Rosa knew how quickly wealthy families could destroy the reputation of a domestic worker.
One accusation could follow her through every agency and private home in Massachusetts.
As Rosa removed her apron, Emma whispered, “I’m sorry.”
Claire claimed the child was apologizing for getting Rosa in trouble.
Then a notification sounded from Daniel’s phone.
The security company had restored one frozen image from the deleted footage.
