Chapter 4 - The Letter from Emma’s Mother

The envelope contained a handwritten letter from Margaret Whitmore, dated three weeks before her death.

Margaret wrote that she no longer trusted Claire or Preston around Emma’s inheritance.

She had discovered that both relatives were pressuring Daniel to sell the townhouse and transfer Emma’s trust into an investment company controlled by Preston.

Margaret feared that if anything happened to her, Rosa would be dismissed before she could protect the child.

The letter named Rosa as a temporary co-trustee and instructed her to preserve security footage from every common room.

Rosa finally understood why Claire wanted her gone.

She was not being punished over cupcakes.

The accident had been created to destroy the credibility of the one employee with legal authority to challenge the family.

A second document showed that Margaret had left Rosa a modest apartment and enough money to complete the nursing degree she abandoned years earlier.

Rosa had never known.

Someone had hidden the will.

Footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Daniel entered and demanded to know why Rosa had returned.

Claire and Preston followed with the private security guard.

Claire saw the papers and accused Rosa of breaking into a dead woman’s room to steal inheritance documents.

Daniel took the letter but refused to accept it immediately.

He said Margaret had been heavily medicated near the end of her life and might not have understood what she signed.

Rosa asked why wealthy relatives treated a dying woman’s judgment as valid when she favored them and unstable when she protected an employee.

Claire ordered the guard to call the police.

Then Emma appeared at the bedroom door.

She admitted giving Rosa the key.

Claire told Daniel that Rosa had manipulated the child.

Emma shouted that no one had manipulated her.

She said Claire made her carry the tray, then grabbed her wrist when she refused to drop it.

The room went silent.

Daniel asked why Emma had blamed Rosa.

The child looked at Claire and answered, “She said she would send me away if I told you.”

Preston moved toward the hallway, but the bedroom television suddenly turned on.

The security camera’s cloud backup had begun restoring itself.
