Chapter 2 - THE DOCTOR WHO LOCKED THE DOOR.
Dr. Marcus Reed entered before the sirens reached the hospital entrance.
He locked the door behind him and looked directly at Victoria.
“You were supposed to get the card quietly.”
Lily recognized him as the physician who had told nurses her mother was confused after the car crash.
Claire had insisted the crash was no accident. No one believed her because Hale Medical Group owned the private hospital and Victoria funded its new children’s wing.
Marcus ordered Lily transferred to another floor.
He said the child was too distressed to remain with Claire.
Victoria called it protection.
Lily understood what they meant.
They wanted to separate her from the only witness who still believed her mother.
Under the bed, Claire inserted the card into her phone. It contained files labeled “PATIENT TRANSFERS,” “TRUST,” and “LILY HALE.”
Her daughter’s name appeared on a guardianship petition.
Victoria had planned to declare Claire mentally unfit and take legal control of Lily.
Then Claire opened the final file.
