Chapter 1 - Every Mark

“You came back for me.”

Emily clung to Colonel Harris’s uniform as he lifted her from the bed.

Her voice broke against the medals on his chest.

“You’re safe now,” he answered.

The thick quilt slipped away, revealing purple-red marks along her left shoulder, forearm and hand.

Daniel froze in the doorway.

Margaret covered her mouth.

Three uniformed Marines remained in the hallway, silent witnesses to the room no outsider had been allowed to enter for eleven days.

“This isn’t what it looks like,” Margaret said.

Colonel Harris turned toward her, still holding his daughter securely.

“Then you will explain every mark on her.”

Daniel found his voice first.

“She fell.”

Emily’s bruised hand tightened against her father’s shoulder.

“No.”

One word.

Barely louder than a breath.

But it destroyed Daniel’s explanation.

Colonel Harris looked at his son-in-law.

“Try again.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“She became unstable after learning her father had died overseas.”

Emily lifted her head.

“You told me he was dead.”

The room went silent.

Colonel Harris stared at Daniel.

“I was never reported dead.”

Margaret stepped forward nervously.

“We were trying to protect her from uncertainty.”

Emily began crying again.

For eleven days, they had taken her phone, dismissed the housekeeper and told everyone she was too grief-stricken to receive visitors.

They had not protected her.

They had isolated her.

Then Colonel Harris noticed a legal folder beneath the bedside lamp.

Across the cover:

HARRIS MILITARY FAMILY HOUSING TRUST — EMERGENCY TRANSFER

His expression changed.

“What were you making her sign?”
