Chapter 10 - The Last Order

The false consulting agreement had been created after Emily’s mother died.

Someone forged both parents’ names.

Used Colonel Harris’s military status.

Used his wife’s trust authority.

Then quietly extracted money for twenty-two years.

Colonel Harris opened the payment history.

The funds moved through a shell company and into Vale Development projects.

Daniel stopped breathing.

“My grandfather founded that company.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Emily understood.

Daniel’s grandfather had used military-family housing money to build the first Vale luxury development.

The family fortune did not merely benefit from the trust.

It began with money taken from it.

Colonel Harris looked at Margaret.

“Did your father do this?”

She remained silent.

Daniel whispered:

“Mother.”

Margaret’s voice finally broke.

“He said the trust was temporary.”

“Temporary?” Emily asked.

“He said military families would never own valuable land properly.”

The contempt had existed before Daniel.

Before Emily’s marriage.

Before Margaret learned to hide it behind charity galas.

Colonel Harris activated the founder-fraud clause.

Vale Development’s trust-funded properties transferred into review.

Employee jobs remained protected.

Family dividends stopped.

The mansion itself appeared on the list.

Margaret stared around the bedroom.

“This house belongs to us.”

Emily looked at the locked door.

“No.”

“You built it with money taken from families you considered beneath you.”

For the first time, Margaret had no answer.

Then the trust opened a final sealed file created by Emily’s mother.

A video appeared.

Her face filled the screen.

Older than Emily remembered.

Frightened.

She spoke directly to Colonel Harris:

“If you are seeing this, the Vales tried to use Emily to take the trust.”

Emily covered her mouth.

Her mother continued:

“Do not believe Margaret planned it alone.”

Daniel stared.

“The person who forged your name is someone Emily trusts.”

A list of original trust officers appeared.

One name remained active.

Rosa Alvarez.

Everyone turned toward the housekeeper.

Rosa’s face went pale.

Emily whispered:

“Rosa?”

The woman who brought the key.

The woman who preserved the photographs.

The woman who helped expose Margaret.

Rosa began crying.

“I did not forge the agreement.”

Colonel Harris looked at her.

“Then why is your name active?”

Rosa removed a sealed military envelope from beneath her coat.

“Because Emily’s mother gave me one final order.”

She placed it in Colonel Harris’s hand.

On the front, in his late wife’s handwriting:

DO NOT OPEN UNTIL EMILY CHOOSES BETWEEN HER FATHER AND THE TRUST.

Emily stopped breathing.

And Rosa said:

May you like

“Your mother knew one of you would have to lose everything.”

TO BE CONTINUED.
