Chapter 9 - His Name

Emily slowly looked at her father.

Colonel Harris appeared genuinely confused.

“I never received money from the trust.”

The account showed otherwise.

Monthly consulting payments.

Travel reimbursements.

Housing allowances.

Millions over two decades.

Daniel almost laughed from disbelief.

“So the hero was stealing too.”

Emily’s expression hardened.

“Do not use another accusation to shrink what you did.”

Daniel fell silent.

Colonel Harris examined the signature records.

The payments began while he was deployed.

They continued during assignments abroad.

They were routed through a company registered at an address he had never seen.

Rosa recognized it.

“That belongs to the Vale family office.”

Margaret went white.

Emily stared at her.

“You used my father’s name.”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

The denial came too quickly.

Colonel Harris found an attached consulting agreement.

His signature appeared at the bottom.

Forged.

But another signature had witnessed it.

Emily’s late mother.

The room went still.

Emily had spent her life believing her mother created the housing trust to support military families.

Now the documents suggested she had helped move money out of it.

Colonel Harris whispered:

“She would never.”

Margaret looked almost relieved.

“Perhaps you did not know your wife as well as you believed.”

Emily turned toward her.

“You sound happy.”

Margaret’s expression changed.

Emily continued.

“You think if my mother was guilty, then what you did becomes less ugly.”

Margaret said nothing.

Then Rosa noticed the agreement date.

Emily’s mother had already been dead for four months when she supposedly signed it.
