Chapter 5 - The Maid’s Key

The bedroom door had been locked from the outside.
Daniel claimed it was for Emily’s safety.
Then someone entered the hallway.
Rosa Alvarez, the dismissed housekeeper, stood beyond the Marines.
Margaret’s face changed.
“You are no longer employed here.”
Rosa looked directly at Emily.
“That is why I kept the key.”
For nine years, Rosa had worked in the Vale mansion.
She prepared Margaret’s meals, remembered Daniel’s schedule and stayed beside Emily through a difficult first pregnancy loss.
Yet Margaret still introduced her as “the woman who helps.”
Rosa held up a small brass key.
“The bedroom lock was changed the morning Colonel Harris was due home.”
Colonel Harris turned toward Daniel.
“You knew I was returning.”
Daniel said nothing.
Rosa continued.
“I heard Mrs. Vale say they needed Emily’s signature before the colonel reached Virginia.”
Margaret stared.
“You were eavesdropping.”
Rosa’s expression hardened.
“I was carrying your breakfast.”
The distinction embarrassed Margaret.
Rich people often forgot staff could hear while serving them.
Rosa handed Colonel Harris a payroll envelope.
Inside were photographs of boxes being removed from the trust office and delivered to the Vale development headquarters.
Emily looked at Daniel.
“You already took the files.”
“They were copies.”
“You planned the redevelopment before I signed.”
Daniel’s silence answered.
Then Rosa revealed one final item.
A key card bearing Colonel Harris’s name.
It had been used to enter the trust archive three nights earlier.

Colonel Harris had been overseas at the time.
Someone had used his military status to make the theft appear authorized.
