Chapter 10 - THE VIDEO SHOWED RICHARD ARRIVING AFTER MIDNIGHT

Richard did not ask them to trust him.

Good.

He asked them to play the tape.

The bank digitized it.

One old surveillance recording.

Five years earlier.

Hargrove Women’s Center.

12:41 a.m.

Vanessa entered in labor.

2:16 a.m.

Miriam arrived.

3:02 a.m.

Claire’s mother, Eleanor Bennett, arrived.

3:49 a.m.

A newborn transfer form was signed.

4:13 a.m.

A black sedan pulled into the rear entrance.

Richard stopped breathing.

The driver door opened.

A man stepped out.

Silver-haired.

Gray beard.

Richard.

The corridor went silent.

Claire looked at him.

Vanessa did too.

Richard stared at the screen.

“I was never there.”

No one answered.

The footage continued.

The man walked exactly like Richard.

Same height.

Same profile.

Same tailored coat.

He entered through the medical staff door.

Six minutes later, Miriam met him.

They disappeared into a private corridor.

That was the first crack.

Claire looked at Richard.

“Where were you that night?”

He answered immediately.

“London.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Convenient.”

Richard reached for his phone.

Flight records.

Hotel charges.

Security conference photographs.

All could prove location.

Claire said,

“Do it.”

No emotion.

Just evidence.

Richard nodded.

The preliminary records appeared.

He had landed in London the day before.

But the overnight flight history showed something strange.

His private jet had left London at 8:10 p.m.

Destination hidden.

Returned at 10:40 a.m.

Richard went pale.

“I was not on that plane.”

That was the second crack.

Someone had used his aircraft.

His signature.

His identity.

Again.

Then the video continued.

At 4:32 a.m., Eleanor carried the newborn out through a side door.

Miriam followed.

The man who looked like Richard remained inside.

At 5:01 a.m., Vanessa’s medical chart was changed.

Infant outcome:

Stillbirth.

At 5:08 a.m., the Richard look-alike signed the final order.

Claire stopped breathing.

The camera finally caught his face directly.

Not Richard.

Similar.

Older.

Related.

Richard whispered,

“No.”

Vanessa looked at him.

Claire saw genuine horror.

“Who is he?”

Richard could barely answer.

“My brother.”

The corridor froze.

Richard had one older brother.

Thomas Whitmore.

Declared dead eighteen years ago.

No public funeral.

No body shown to Richard.

Only a sealed family statement.

The pattern returned.

Again.

Dead people.

False records.

Borrowed identities.

Richard opened the family archive.

Thomas Whitmore had served as original trustee of the Prenatal Succession Trust.

And his initials appeared on the first version of the second-child clause.

Claire stared at the screen.

“So Thomas was alive five years ago.”

Richard nodded.

Vanessa looked at the little girl in the bank footage.

“And he helped take my daughter.”

Silence.

Then Richard found one final clause in the trust.

If both Richard and Thomas were alive, control of the trust did not pass through the children.

It passed to whichever brother produced the first legally acknowledged Whitmore heir.

Claire’s hand moved over her belly.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Her daughter.

Claire’s unborn child.

Two heirs.

Two brothers.

One hidden trustee.

And a trust worth sixty-eight million dollars.

Then Vanessa whispered,

“There’s something else.”

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at Richard.

“When I was pregnant, Miriam told me the father was a Whitmore.”

The corridor went completely silent.

Richard’s face hardened.

“Who?”

Vanessa looked at the old surveillance image.

At Thomas.

Then back at Richard.

And said,

“I was never told which brother.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Richard stared at her.

The little girl might not only be Vanessa’s hidden daughter.

She might be Richard’s niece.

May you like

Or Richard’s own biological child.

And somewhere, Miriam had the missing birth certificate that could prove which one.
