Chapter 4 - SOMEONE KNEW BEFORE CLAIRE DID

Claire stared at the timestamp.
9:12 a.m.
Trust activated.
11:40 a.m.
Pregnancy confirmed to Claire.
Two hours.
Twenty-eight minutes.
Someone knew first.
Richard called the private medical portal administrator.
No answer.
Then he opened the access log.
Three names.
Claire.
Richard.
And one emergency family liaison.
Vanessa Reed.
Claire stopped breathing.
“You were listed on my medical access?”
Vanessa said nothing.
That was the first crack.
Richard looked at her.
“I never authorized that.”
Claire asked quietly,
“Did you?”
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“Your late wife did.”
The room changed.
Richard went completely still.
“My late wife has been dead for seven years.”
Silence.
Vanessa had answered too fast.
Too specifically.
Wrong move.
That was the second crack.
Richard searched the authorization history.
The access had supposedly been created seven years earlier by his late wife, Eleanor Whitmore.
But Claire had only married Richard eleven months ago.
Why would a dead woman authorize Vanessa to access the future medical records of a wife Richard had not even met yet?
Impossible.
Unless the authorization had been altered.
Richard opened the original file.
The beneficiary name had been changed.
One field overwritten.
Originally:
Family reproductive health liaison for Eleanor Whitmore.
Updated six weeks earlier:
Family reproductive health liaison for Claire Whitmore.
Same authorization.
New woman.
Dead person’s approval recycled.
Claire looked at Vanessa.
“You copied a dead woman’s permission onto my name.”
Vanessa said nothing.
That was the third crack.
Then Richard found another access.
Vanessa had opened Claire’s pregnancy result at 9:14 a.m.
Two minutes after the trust activated.
Claire’s eyes filled.
“You knew before I did.”
No answer.
“And instead of telling me…”
Her voice broke once.
“You started writing why no one should believe me.”
Silence.
Richard closed his eyes.
Then reopened them.
Cold.
“What else did you access?”
The log answered.
Prenatal records.
Emergency contact forms.
Insurance.
Medical decision preferences.
And one draft hospital directive.
Claire frowned.
“I never made a hospital directive.”
Richard opened it.
The document stated that if Claire became medically unavailable during pregnancy, temporary decision authority would transfer to—
Vanessa.
The room died.
Claire slowly looked at her.
“You were going to control decisions about my baby.”
Vanessa finally snapped.
“Only temporarily.”
There it was.
Again.
Temporary.
The word people use when they want permanent power without sounding dangerous.
Richard read further.
The document carried Claire’s signature.
She went pale.
“I never signed that.”
He looked at the signature source.
Then froze.
“What?”
Claire asked.
Richard could barely answer.
“The signature came from our wedding license.”
Silence.
They had copied Claire’s wedding signature.
The moment she legally became Richard’s wife had been used to prepare taking authority away from her.
Claire looked down.
That pain was quieter.
Worse.
Then Richard saw one final attachment.
A scanned ultrasound image.
Claire’s name.
Claire’s date of birth.
But the date was wrong.
Three months earlier.
Before Claire was pregnant.
Richard stared at it.
Claire looked at him.
“That isn’t mine.”
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
Too late.
May you like
Because someone had created a pregnancy file for Claire before she was pregnant.
And attached an ultrasound belonging to another woman.
