Chapter 2 - THE REPORT WAS WRITTEN BEFORE THE BABY WAS ANNOUNCED

Richard read the date three times.

Six weeks earlier.

Claire’s pregnancy had been confirmed four weeks ago.

He looked at Vanessa.

“How did you know?”

She lifted her chin.

“I didn’t.”

Claire almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because rich people always denied the question they were most afraid to answer.

Richard held up the report.

“This document refers to pregnancy-related instability.”

Vanessa said nothing.

That was the first crack.

Claire slowly stood with Richard’s help.

One hand remained protectively over her belly.

She did not shout.

She did not lunge.

She only looked at Vanessa.

“Who told you I was pregnant?”

No answer.

Richard turned the next page.

A recommended restriction on Claire’s access to:

Household accounts.

Family trust information.

Medical records.

And decisions involving her unborn child.

The room changed.

Claire stopped breathing.

“My baby?”

Vanessa said quickly,

“It was precautionary.”

There it was.

Precautionary.

The favorite word of people planning permanent control.

Richard’s face hardened.

“Who prepared this?”

Vanessa looked away.

Wrong move.

Claire saw it.

“So there was someone else.”

Silence.

That was the second crack.

Richard examined the document.

No lawyer name.

No doctor name.

Only initials.

M.H.

Claire frowned.

“Who is M.H.?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Richard knew.

His face changed.

Claire noticed immediately.

“You recognize it.”

He looked at her.

“My late wife’s estate attorney was named Michael Hargrove.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Too late.

Michael Hargrove had died eight years earlier.

Yet his initials appeared on a six-week-old competency report.

Claire whispered,

“A dead lawyer prepared my file?”

Richard turned the page.

Then stopped.

At the bottom was a digital authorization.

His own name.

Richard Whitmore.

He went completely still.

“I never approved this.”

Claire stared at him.

“I believe you.”

Those three words hurt him.

Because someone had counted on him not believing her.

Richard examined the signature certificate.

It came from his private office terminal.

At 2:14 a.m.

On a night he had been in Chicago.

Vanessa looked toward the security camera above the corridor.

Wrong move.

That was the third crack.

Claire followed her eyes.

“The camera.”

Vanessa immediately said,

“It has no sound.”

Richard looked at her.

“No one asked.”

Silence.

Then he pulled out his phone.

Opened the mansion security archive.

Found the night the report was authorized.

And pressed play.

The first frame showed Vanessa entering his private office.

But she was not alone.

Someone in a dark coat walked in behind her.

The face was hidden.

Then the audio began.

A male voice said:

“Once Claire is pregnant, we only have until the child is born.”

Richard froze.

Claire stopped breathing.

Vanessa went pale.

May you like

And the hidden man continued:

“After that, the trust becomes hers.”
