Chapter 5 - THE ULTRASOUND DID NOT BELONG TO CLAIRE

The ultrasound carried Claire’s name.

But it was not Claire’s baby.

That was the first crack.

Richard enlarged the image.

Different hospital.

Different patient code.

Different date.

Vanessa said,

“Medical systems make mistakes.”

Claire looked at her.

“Not mistakes that know my name before I’m pregnant.”

Silence.

Richard searched the embedded file data.

Original patient initials:

V.R.

Vanessa Reed.

The corridor went cold.

Claire looked at her.

“It was yours.”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

No answer.

That was enough.

Richard stared at the image.

“You were pregnant?”

Vanessa’s lips trembled.

Years of confidence collapsed in one second.

“It doesn’t matter.”

Wrong answer.

Claire looked at her.

“It mattered enough to put my name on it.”

That was the second crack.

Richard checked the date.

Five years earlier.

Vanessa had been pregnant five years ago.

Before Richard married Claire.

Before he even met Claire.

Richard’s face tightened.

“Whose child?”

Vanessa looked away.

No answer.

Then Claire noticed something.

The trust clause.

First child born to Richard’s legal spouse.

Not first biological child.

Not first child in the family.

Legal spouse.

Claire looked at Richard.

“Was she trying to use an old pregnancy to claim the trust?”

He shook his head slowly.

“The timing would not work.”

Vanessa whispered,

“You don’t know everything.”

There it was.

The third crack.

Richard looked at her.

“Then tell me.”

She did not.

Claire studied the ultrasound.

Then noticed the medical facility name.

Hargrove Women’s Center.

The same surname as Michael Hargrove.

The dead attorney whose initials appeared on Claire’s competency report.

Richard saw it too.

The lawyer.

The clinic.

The trust.

The false pregnancy file.

All connected.

He opened old company records.

Hargrove Women’s Center had been owned by a private family foundation.

One beneficiary.

Vanessa Reed.

Claire stopped breathing.

“You owned the clinic.”

Vanessa said nothing.

Richard continued searching.

Then stopped.

The clinic closed four years earlier.

But one sealed medical storage account remained active.

Paid by the Whitmore trust.

Monthly.

For five years.

Richard frowned.

“What are they storing?”

Vanessa went pale.

That was enough.

He opened the invoice history.

One category.

Restricted reproductive records and neonatal identity documents.

The corridor froze.

Claire’s hand moved over her belly.

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“What child are you hiding?”

No answer.

Then the mansion security system chimed.

A newly recovered audio file appeared.

Recorded six weeks earlier.

Vanessa’s voice.

The hidden man.

And one sentence that changed everything.

The man said:

“If Claire’s child is born first, Vanessa loses the only claim she has left.”

Richard stopped breathing.

Claire stared at Vanessa.

The blonde woman who had cornered her in the hallway was not only afraid of losing money.

May you like

She had once had a child.

And somewhere, there might still be a hidden heir.
