Chapter 10 - THE BRACELET HE COULD NOT EXPLAIN.

By then, the ruined wedding no longer belonged to Ryan or Madison. It belonged to the truth, and the truth had a longer memory than any ballroom.

Mr. Carter bent and picked up the silver bracelet Ryan had dropped in panic. He turned it over beneath the chandelier light, studying the tiny engraving inside.

Then he smiled without kindness.

“This was never Madison’s property.”

Madison frowned. “What?”

He handed the bracelet to Sophia.

Her fingers shook as she traced the inscription hidden along the inner clasp.

For our granddaughter. Love, Mom.

Sophia looked like the air had been knocked out of her chest.

“My mother gave this to me before she died.”

Every guest turned back to Ryan.

He had not planted a random piece of jewelry. He had planted Sophia’s dead mother’s bracelet in an effort to brand her a thief with her own inheritance.

Ryan finally looked beaten. Not frightened. Exposed.

Sophia held the bracelet and stared at him through tears.

“You didn’t just betray me,” she said. “You used the last thing my mother left me so a room full of strangers would believe I was trash.”

Mr. Carter placed one steady hand at her back.

“Take my daughter to the car,” he told security. “This wedding is over.”

Sophia began to turn away, then stopped cold.

Inside the same clutch, behind the sonogram and the certificate, her phone lit up with a new message from an unknown number.

Do not let Ryan get arrested yet. He didn’t act alone. Madison’s mother helped plan everything.
