Chapter 6 - THE BRIDE WHO REALIZED SHE WAS THE DEAL.

Madison had spent months believing she was the prize.
The perfect bride. The beautiful merger between families. The woman chosen publicly, adored visibly, envied quietly.
Now she stood in the middle of her own ballroom realizing she might have been nothing more than a signature in white satin.
“What board seat?” she asked, voice thin with rage.
Sophia swallowed hard. This part had cost her sleep, dignity, and any last fantasy that love had ever been steering Ryan’s choices.
“Your father’s company holds the hotel debt Ryan’s family has been trying to bury. Marriage to you gives him access, forgiveness, and control. Marriage to me gave him a child he could hide. He wanted both.”
Ryan laughed, but too loudly. “That is insane.”
Mr. Carter’s attorney disagreed.
“We reviewed pre-engagement correspondence after Ms. Carter called for assistance. Ryan requested a private meeting with Madison’s trust office two months before the proposal.”
Madison turned to Ryan slowly. “You negotiated with my family before you bought my ring?”
He said nothing.
That silence did more damage than any confession.
Sophia lowered herself into a chair one guest hurried to bring her. She was pale now, exhausted by adrenaline, but her voice stayed steady.
“I thought he wanted me poor because it made him feel needed,” she said. “The truth was worse. He wanted me powerless because it made me easier to erase.”
Then Madison asked to see the date on the meeting request.

When the attorney handed it over, she nearly dropped the page.
It had been sent the same morning Ryan had married Sophia.
