Chapter 5 - THE TEXTS THAT MADE THE BRIDE SHAKE.

It was not a legal file.
It was a message thread.
Sophia opened it with fingers that trembled less from fear now than from fury finally allowed to breathe. She scrolled until she found the lines Ryan could not explain away.
I can’t acknowledge the baby until after the wedding.
If you come to the ballroom, they’ll call you unstable.
Bring no one. If Carter learns, everything falls apart.
Madison covered her mouth. “You knew about the baby.”
Ryan’s voice sharpened. “Those messages are manipulated.”
Sophia looked at him in disbelief. “You came to my apartment with prenatal vitamins and a promise ring, and now I’m manipulating screenshots?”
Mr. Carter handed the phone to one of his attorneys, who had quietly entered behind security. “Authenticate every file.”
Madison’s humiliation turned ugly. Not at Sophia. At Ryan.
“So that’s why you wanted me to move up the ceremony.” Her eyes narrowed. “You weren’t protecting us. You were racing the truth.”
Ryan grabbed her wrist. “Lower your voice.”
The entire ballroom noticed.
Sophia flinched at the sight, not because she pitied Madison, but because she recognized the gesture. The first time Ryan had gripped her like that, he had apologized with roses and tears. The second time, he had called it stress. The third time, he had disappeared for three weeks.
Madison tore her hand free.
Then Sophia said the one thing that made the bride’s face drain completely.
“He didn’t choose you, Madison. He chose your family’s board seat.”
