Chapter 9 - THE SONOGRAM BEHIND THE LIPSTICK CASE.

Sophia opened the silver clutch again, this time reaching beneath the phone, beneath the lipstick case, beneath the folded tissue that had soaked up tears all evening.
She removed a sonogram envelope and handed it to her father.
Ryan closed his eyes.
Mr. Carter opened it carefully, then drew out the image for the front row to see. Taped to the back was a handwritten note in Ryan’s own unmistakable scrawl.
If it’s a boy, my grandfather’s trust can’t exclude him.
Madison took a step backward.
Sophia spoke before anyone else could.
“He never loved the baby as a child. He loved the baby as leverage.”
The disgust in the ballroom had ripened into something meaner now—public shame. The kind powerful men fear because it survives documents and outlives courtrooms.
Ryan tried one last turn.
“She came here to destroy me because she knew I was moving on.”
Sophia stood, slower this time, but stronger.
“No. I came because you told me poor women should be grateful for private apologies and quiet settlements. I came because you believed a public room would always protect the richer liar.”
Mr. Carter folded the sonogram note and passed it to his attorney.
“File for emergency injunction, fraud referral, and criminal review.”
Madison lifted her veil away from her face and looked directly at Sophia.
“I need to know one thing,” she said. “Did he ever tell you he loved me?”
Sophia answered with brutal honesty.
“No. He told me you were the door.”
Then the officiant quietly removed the marriage contract from the table.

But Ryan’s expression changed again when he saw where Mr. Carter looked next.
Toward the bracelet.
