Chapter 5 - THE FATHER THEY DECLARED DEAD.

Rafael Torres was found in a private rehabilitation residence outside Chicago.
He was conscious, alert and furious that Bellamy had declared him dead.
Maya did not rush into an easy reunion.
“You watched me grow up believing you chose work over us.”
Rafael lowered his eyes.
“Eleanor threatened to accuse your mother of theft and place you in foster care.”
Maya answered, “Fear explains why you disappeared. It does not return the years.”
Rafael revealed the replica necklace was part of a recurring trap. Whenever an apprentice questioned missing royalties, Bellamy planted training jewelry, accused the worker publicly and forced a settlement to drop charges.
Claire said she had never seen that system.
Ruth replied, “Privilege means being protected from the machinery that protects you.”
David admitted signing settlements he was told were voluntary resignations.
Then investigators opened the oldest file.
Maya’s mother, Elena Torres, had signed the first settlement.

She received two million dollars to testify that Rafael stole the original necklace.
Elena had always told Maya she survived on minimum-wage jobs.
