Chapter 2 - The Mother Who Signed Her Away
Claire’s mother, Evelyn Shaw, had been described as a hotel maid who abandoned her daughter for money.
Arthur repeated that story without hesitation.
“She accepted a settlement and disappeared.”
Claire stared at him.
“You say ‘maid’ as if the uniform made her dishonest. Your family wore tuxedos while forging the papers.”
Helen revealed that Evelyn had reported wage theft inside Vale Hotels.
Housekeepers were forced to work unpaid hours, while injury claims vanished through foundation doctors.
When Evelyn threatened to testify, the company offered her a choice: sign Claire into Blackridge or lose housing, employment and medical care for both of them.
Arthur called it a voluntary agreement.
Claire’s anger hardened.
“A mother choosing between homelessness and her child is not consent. It is extortion written by attorneys who never miss dinner.”
The guests shifted uncomfortably.
Many had donated to the same foundation.
Diana produced Evelyn’s final recorded statement.
Evelyn said Arthur promised Claire would receive education and safety.
Instead, Blackridge used isolation, humiliation and forced labor to break girls who knew too much.
Arthur claimed he never visited the facility.
Claire answered, “That is your defense? You signed children away, then protected your conscience by never seeing the doors close?”
The recording ended with Evelyn whispering another name.
She said Claire had not been sent alone.
Arthur’s daughter, Margaret Vale, had been transferred the same night under a different identity.
