Claire remembered escaping Blackridge at seventeen with help from a kitchen worker named Rosa Martinez.
She lived under a false identity, worked nights and eventually became an attorney for institutional survivors.
She never understood why police found her six years later and placed her inside a private medical ward.
Dr. Lane admitted the Vale Foundation had tracked her.
Margaret feared Claire would expose Blackridge during her first major lawsuit.
A court evaluator declared her delusional, and officers returned her without a hearing.
Claire stared at Margaret.
“You did not inherit your father’s cowardice. You improved it.”
Margaret snapped, “I protected thousands of Vale employees from a collapse your accusations would have caused.”
Claire’s voice rose.
“You always hide behind workers after stealing their choices. You underpaid them, used their children and then claimed every crime saved their jobs.”
Lane revealed that Claire’s second confinement lasted eight months.
During that period, doctors removed medical samples and conducted unauthorized fertility procedures on several women.
Claire’s records showed an embryo transfer.
She had never been told.
Arthur demanded to know whether a child had been born.
Lane lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Claire’s knees nearly gave way.
The child had been placed with a wealthy Vale donor and raised under sealed guardianship.
Margaret claimed she knew nothing.
Lane opened the adoption file.
The guardian was Senator Margaret Vale.
