Chapter 3 - The Senator Who Called Pain a Lie
Margaret Vale entered wearing a silver evening suit and the confidence of a woman accustomed to controlling every room.
She denied ever living at Blackridge.
“This woman is exploiting healed scars to attack a public family.”
Claire did not lower her eyes.
“You built a career telling poor mothers to report abuse, while calling your own history impossible because it embarrassed your father.”
Margaret accused Claire of manufacturing records.
She said people from unstable backgrounds often created elaborate stories to explain personal failure.
Helen slammed a photograph onto the table.
It showed two teenage girls inside Blackridge laundry uniforms.
One was Claire.
The other was Margaret.
Arthur’s face collapsed.
Margaret claimed the image was altered.
Diana then played an audio recording of a Blackridge supervisor addressing “Margaret Vale” and ordering her to deny knowing Claire.
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Margaret’s voice turned vicious.
“You think surviving one institution makes you equal to the family that rescued you?”
Claire answered, “No. Surviving your family taught me exactly how little your title is worth.”
Arthur demanded to know why Margaret had never spoken.
She looked at him with hatred.
“Because you came for me.”
Claire froze.
Margaret revealed that Arthur secretly removed her from Blackridge after discovering his own daughter had been transferred by mistake.
Claire and the other employee children were left behind.
Arthur had rescued blood and abandoned everyone else.
Then Margaret delivered the cruelest truth.
She had begged him to take Claire too.
Arthur replied, “One scandal was already enough.”
Claire looked at him.
