Chapter 6 - The Daughter Raised by Her Enemy

Margaret’s daughter, Anna Vale, stepped from the crowd wearing a black evening gown.
She looked from Margaret to Claire, unable to understand why everyone suddenly watched her.
Claire did not rush toward her.
She knew stolen motherhood could not be repaired by claiming another person publicly.
Margaret admitted Anna was born through Blackridge’s fertility program.
She said the adoption had been lawful and that she had given the child a life Claire could never afford.
Claire’s expression hardened.
“You stole my body, stole my child and now use your mansion as proof the theft was merciful.”
Margaret shouted, “I sent her to the best schools. I protected her from poverty.”
Anna faced her.
“You protected me from the truth because the truth would make you look like what you are.”
Arthur attempted to call the situation a family matter.
Anna turned on him.
“A family matter? That is what rich people call a crime when the victims share their last name.”
DNA testing confirmed Claire was Anna’s biological mother.
Anna refused to choose between identities immediately.
She demanded access to every record and moved out of Margaret’s home.
Federal agents arrested Dr. Lane for unlawful medical procedures.
Margaret’s immunity was suspended pending investigation.
The satisfaction in the ballroom was sharp as donors who once begged for her attention stepped away from her.
Then Helen discovered something inside Anna’s birth file.
The listed genetic father was Arthur Vale.
Claire stared at the elderly patriarch.
Arthur swore he had never consented.

Margaret whispered, “Neither did she.”
And the evidence showed someone else had designed the child to control them both.
