Chapter 1 - The Orange Drink
Lily tipped the tray on purpose.
The tall glass slid from the silver surface and struck the marble without breaking. Orange liquid spread between Ethan and Victoria as the wedding guests gasped.
“You ruined everything!”
Victoria stepped toward the kneeling waitress and made a sharp motion near her face.
Lily recoiled, one hand rising instinctively to her cheek.
But she did not apologize.
Her eyes were wet before the glass ever fell.
“I had to do it.”
Victoria stared down at her black uniform.
“You are finished in this hotel.”
Lily pulled a dark smartphone from her apron.
“Please—look at this.”
Ethan accepted it.
The black-and-white security recording showed the same orange drink sitting on a marble service counter. An unidentified hand entered the frame and dropped one small white object into the glass.
Lily’s voice shook.
“I had to stop you from drinking it.”
Ethan watched the clip twice.
Then slowly turned toward Victoria.
“Explain this.”
She looked at the phone.
Then at the drink spreading across the floor.
“I don’t know who recorded that.”
“That was not my question.”
The guests fell silent beneath the chandeliers.
Victoria lowered her voice.
“Ethan, this is your wedding day. Do not let a frightened employee create a public scandal.”
Lily looked up.
“I’m frightened because she told me what would happen if I spilled it.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“What did she say?”
“That no hotel in New York would hire me again.”
Victoria’s diamonds caught the ballroom light as she folded her arms.
“You were already on final warning.”
“For what?”
Lily unlocked another file.
A termination letter appeared.
It had been prepared three hours before she dropped the drink.
