Chapter 10 - The Borrowed Voice

Richard stared at the metadata.

“I gave those instructions months earlier.”

The recording had been assembled from several older conversations.

His beliefs were real.

His words were real.

But someone had rearranged them to direct Victoria on the wedding day.

Malcolm looked toward the exit.

The employee council had already disabled his private credentials.

Ethan opened the voice-authentication logs.

Sterling executives could approve contracts with a spoken command.

Ordinary workers needed badges, passwords and supervisor verification.

The family called that convenience.

Someone had used it to turn Richard’s prejudice into an active order.

The synthetic recording came from Ethan’s account.

His voice had also approved Lily’s termination letter, the Meridian Crown purchase and the drink assignment.

Ethan shook his head.

“I never issued those commands.”

Lily looked at him.

“But you approved the system that treated your voice as more trustworthy than living employees.”

“Yes.”

He ordered all voice-only authorization disabled.

Worker representatives received equal oversight of identity systems.

His technology equity would fund the external audit.

No expense would return to the employee reserve.

The auditor traced the synthetic commands to the bridal suite.

Victoria’s key had opened it.

Malcolm’s tablet had connected there.

Richard’s archived voice had been uploaded.

But none of them created the administrator account.

The account belonged to Ethan Sterling.

Same Social Security number.

Same birthday.

Different photograph.

Ethan stared at the screen.

“Someone created another legal version of me.”

The second identity had voted in company meetings for nine years.

Signed property transfers.

Approved executive bonuses.

And witnessed Rosa’s false certificate.

Lily’s phone rang again.

The incoming call displayed Ethan’s private number.

The real Ethan stood beside her.

She activated the speaker.

His own voice said:

“The drink was never meant to secure Victoria’s proxy.”

A pause.

“It was meant to make everyone challenge the wedding documents.”

Claire, the independent housing attorney, opened the final locked attachment.

The merger packet contained a hidden automatic transfer.

If the documents were exposed publicly before the vows, control of Meridian Crown moved to the second Ethan identity.

Someone had planned for Lily to discover the phone.

Planned for her to spill the drink.

Planned for Victoria to humiliate her.

The entire confrontation had been anticipated.

Ethan looked toward the bridal suite.

“Who are you?”

The cloned voice answered:

“The person your father hired to become the son who never questioned him.”

The suite door opened.

A man in a black tuxedo stepped into the ballroom.

He had Ethan’s height.

Ethan’s hairstyle.

And the same Sterling signet ring.

But his face was different.

He placed the original employee charter beside the spilled orange drink.

Then looked directly at Lily.

“Your mother did not create Meridian Crown.”

A pause.

May you like

“She created me.”

TO BE CONTINUED.
