Chapter 2 - The Prepared Blame
Victoria called the letter a standard contingency.
“A nervous server was carrying a drink beside expensive equipment.”
Lily looked at the intact glass on the floor.
“You knew which drink I would carry.”
The service assignment had been changed fifteen minutes before the ceremony.
Lily was originally scheduled to serve champagne near the ballroom entrance.
Victoria’s private event director moved her to Ethan’s table and instructed her to deliver one orange drink personally.
No replacement server was permitted.
No guest was allowed to take it.
Ethan opened the assignment log.
“Why was this prepared only for me?”
Victoria answered quickly.
“You requested something without alcohol before signing the marriage documents.”
“I requested sparkling water.”
The hotel beverage manager joined the review.
The orange drink had not come from the main bar.
It was prepared in a private service pantry accessed only by Victoria, the family attorney and the hotel’s executive event staff.
Lily had entered the pantry after hearing her mother’s old phone ring inside.
Her mother, Rosa Brooks, had worked at the hotel for twenty-nine years before dying the previous winter.
The phone disappeared with her employment records.
Lily found it hidden beneath a stack of wedding folders.
Its camera had been positioned toward the drink.
“It was already recording,” Lily said.
Victoria looked at her sharply.
“You entered a restricted room.”
“My mother’s phone was ringing.”
“That did not give you permission.”
The class judgment came easily.
A wealthy hostess could redirect employees, hide devices and prepare termination documents.
A waitress entering the wrong pantry became the greater violation.
Ethan asked the hotel physician to review the white object without discussing dosage or private medical details.
The answer was simple.
It was an unapproved medication capable of affecting alertness and judgment.
Not intended to cause physical harm.
Intended to make Ethan appear confused.
Victoria’s confidence returned slightly.
“Then perhaps someone wanted you embarrassed.”
Lily opened the wedding folder found beside the phone.
