Chapter 5 - THE MONEY HER FATHER NEVER BROUGHT HOME.
Elena’s father, Miguel Morales, spoke from a recording made eight years earlier.
He said Vale contractors had withheld wages from rebuilding crews after a major hurricane. When workers organized, they were threatened with immigration audits, eviction, and blacklisting.
Miguel accepted a settlement because Victoria promised to pay the crews quietly.
The money never reached them.
Instead, the Vale Foundation used his signature to claim every worker had been compensated.
Elena’s voice shook.
“They turned his surrender into proof everyone agreed.”
Victoria showed no regret.
“Your father understood reality. Poor men with families cannot afford principles forever.”
Elena stepped closer.
“No. Rich families create desperation, then congratulate themselves when someone breaks.”
Adrian asked why Miguel’s recording was hidden in Arthur’s office.
Arthur appeared in the doorway, supported by a cane.
He was alive, weak, and furious.
“I kept it because your mother ordered the original erased.”
Victoria looked at him.
“You were supposed to stay upstairs.”
Arthur laughed bitterly.
“That sentence is the Vale family creed.”
He admitted the funeral had been staged after he opposed the relief-fund transfers. Victoria declared him medically incompetent, removed him from the board, and told the public he died from complications.
Adrian stared at his mother.
“You buried my father to keep a company vote.”
Victoria answered, “I preserved thousands of jobs.”
Rosa finally snapped.
“You stole our wages, then used our jobs as a shield.”
Arthur handed Elena a sealed ledger.
It listed every unpaid worker.
Beside Miguel’s name was another note:
“Daughter placed inside family through Adrian.”
Elena looked at Adrian.
“What does that mean?”
