Chapter 1 - THE FALL FROM THE BALCONY.

Elena Vale was still begging when her mother-in-law pushed her toward the open atrium.
One moment, Elena stood beside the white stone balustrade, clutching a crumpled tissue against her chest.
The next, the polished marble disappeared beneath her feet.
Her ruby-red dress opened like a torn flag as she fell through the center of the mansion.
Above her, Margaret Vale remained perfectly still.
She did not scream for help.
She did not reach over the railing.
She simply watched Elena fall with the cold patience of a woman who believed the house would protect her version of the truth.
Daniel heard Elena’s scream from the corridor below.
He ran toward the staircase and caught her across the back and legs just before she struck the landing.
The force drove him down two steps, but he held on.
Elena trembled in his arms, unable to breathe normally.
Daniel looked up toward the balcony.
“Who did this?”
Elena raised one shaking hand.
“She pushed me.”
Margaret descended slowly, her burgundy gown sweeping behind her.
By then, wealthy relatives and dinner guests had gathered beneath the chandeliers.
Margaret did not look frightened.
She looked offended.
“Elena lost her balance,” she said. “She has been emotional all evening.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“My wife said you pushed her.”
Margaret turned toward the guests as though asking reasonable people to judge an unreasonable woman.
“She is frightened because I discovered what she has been hiding.”
Elena opened her fist.
Inside the crumpled tissue was a small brass key stained with tears.
Margaret saw it and stopped walking.
Then Elena whispered, “She tried to make me give this back before you came home.”
Daniel looked from the key to his mother.
“What does it open?”
May you like
Margaret answered before Elena could.
“Something your father ordered buried.”
