Chapter 6 - THE SIGNATURE BEFORE THE WEDDING.
Daniel remembered signing dozens of documents before the wedding.
Margaret told him they were temporary financing approvals for the mansion renovation and foundation gala.
He had trusted her.
He had signed without reading every page because the family had trained him to believe responsibility meant protecting the Vale image.
That negligence now carried the weight of forty-seven displaced families.
Elena did not accuse him of knowingly stealing.
She asked a harder question.
“How many people lost their homes because reading the papers was inconvenient?”
Daniel had no answer.
Margaret stepped closer to her son, certain blood would finally matter more than truth.
She said Daniel had made a mistake, but mistakes inside a family should be handled privately.
Elena nearly laughed.
Margaret demanded privacy only when the powerful faced consequences.
When tenants missed rent, their names appeared on public notices.
When employees challenged the foundation, their records followed them to every future job.
When Elena cried after being insulted, Margaret discussed her emotional condition with guests.
But when millions disappeared, suddenly dignity required secrecy.
Daniel ordered Charles to contact federal investigators and the state attorney general.
Margaret slapped the ledger shut.
“If you expose this, the Vale companies fall with me.”
She reminded Daniel that thousands of employees depended on the family.
The threat was familiar.
Powerful people took the money, then placed innocent workers between themselves and accountability.
Ruth revealed that James anticipated the argument.
His letter directed that personal Vale assets be used to restore the housing fund before any employee wages were touched.
The mansion, art collection, vacation homes, and family investments could all be liquidated.
Margaret looked around the atrium she had ruled for decades.
For the first time, the marble walls seemed less like protection and more like collateral.
Daniel told her the mansion would be sold if necessary.
She stared at him as though he had chosen a stranger over his blood.
Then she pointed at Elena.
“She is not a stranger. She is the reason your father died believing you betrayed him.”
Daniel’s face changed.
Margaret claimed James discovered the signed transfer and assumed Daniel knowingly approved it.
He died before Daniel could explain.
Elena looked at the sealed medical file still inside the metal box.
