Chapter 10 - THE MAN BEHIND THE VALE NAME.
Sofia revealed that James Vale had opened the account under Elena’s name.
He did it after discovering the first stolen housing funds.
Instead of reporting the scheme immediately, he moved part of the money into a protected account as leverage against his own family.
He intended to return it once he gathered enough evidence.
But years passed.
His silence protected the Vale companies while poor tenants continued paying the price.
James eventually regretted the decision, but regret did not restore the families displaced during those years.
The truth forced Daniel to confront something more complicated than a cruel mother and an innocent father.
Margaret had committed fraud, coercion, and violence.
James had tried to expose her near the end.
But before that, he had chosen the family name over the people the foundation was supposed to serve.
The Vale fortune had not been corrupted by one villain.
It had been preserved by generations of people who believed reputation mattered more than accountability.
Elena refused the mansion, the hidden account, and James’s offer of a permanent trust position.
She agreed to oversee restitution only if tenant representatives, former employees, and independent attorneys controlled the majority of the board.
Daniel transferred his personal shares into the repayment fund.
The mansion would be sold.
Margaret’s private collection would be liquidated.
Ruth and every employee threatened with lost benefits would receive protected pensions outside Vale control.
Charles and the physician were referred for investigation.
Margaret stood beneath the chandelier while workers removed the family portraits from the walls.
She looked smaller without the house agreeing with her.
“You think they will respect you now?” she asked Elena. “They respect the money behind your name.”
Elena removed the Vale wedding ring and placed it on the old ledger.
“Then I will build a life where the name has no power.”
Daniel did not ask her to put the ring back on.
He told her he would earn the right to ask again, even if the answer remained no.
Elena walked toward the front doors beside her mother and Ruth.
For the first time, Margaret was the one left behind.
It should have felt like the end.
Then Mr. Hale called Elena’s name.
He had found one final recording inside the chandelier archive.
The date was two days before the balcony attack.
On the screen, Daniel stood alone with Margaret.
