Chapter 7 - THE MEDICAL FILE THEY KEPT SEALED.
The atrium fell silent as Daniel opened his father’s medical file.
James Vale had suffered from a serious heart condition, but the documents revealed repeated changes to his medication during the final month of his life.
The approved dosage had been reduced.
A sedative was added on days when attorneys visited.
Several consent forms carried signatures James could not have written after losing movement in his dominant hand.
The family physician immediately denied responsibility.
He claimed Margaret managed the medication schedule through a private nursing service.
Margaret accused Elena of planting the file.
Elena had never seen it before.
Ruth had.
She explained that James became confused only after Margaret replaced his longtime nurse.
Whenever he appeared alert, he asked to speak with Daniel.
Those calls never reached him.
Margaret told Daniel his father was too weak for visitors.
She told James that Daniel was too busy preparing for the wedding.
Father and son spent the final weeks believing the other had chosen not to come.
Daniel’s anger shifted into grief.
He had allowed his mother to control every message because confronting illness frightened him.
Margaret had taken advantage of his avoidance, but he could not pretend he had played no role.
The physician attempted to leave.
Mr. Hale, the elderly Vale steward who had silently entered with the investigators Daniel called, blocked the doorway.
Hale revealed that James installed a private recording system after noticing medication discrepancies.
A camera had been hidden inside the chandelier’s maintenance balcony.
Margaret looked upward.
The chandelier crystals trembled faintly from the movement of the investigators accessing the narrow platform.
The system had not been connected to the mansion network.
Its recordings were stored locally inside the chandelier frame.
One file remained from the night James signed Elena’s appointment letter.
Another remained from the morning he died.
Margaret said the recordings violated her privacy.
Elena looked at the woman who had pushed her from the balcony.
“You lost the right to hide behind privacy when you used it to hurt everyone else.”
Mr. Hale connected the storage drive to the atrium screen.
The first video showed James speaking clearly.
The second showed someone entering his room with a medication tray.
The figure wore a dark burgundy gown.
But Margaret was not alone.
