Chapter 2 - The Trainer They Paid as a Cleaner

Cole claimed the knife had been stolen and accused Elena of staging the danger for attention. His father, ranch owner Harrison Barrett, ordered security to remove her before investigators arrived. “This arena belongs to my family,” Harrison said. Elena faced him across the dust. “Your family owns the seats. Workers built everything beneath them.” The handler, Luis Ortega, revealed that Elena had trained bulls for years while being paid as a cleaner because the Barretts refused to give a Latina woman an official arena title. Cole sneered, “You carried buckets. Do not confuse access with expertise.” Luis produced payroll records showing Elena performed professional training duties without benefits or hazard pay. Then the bull’s veterinary file appeared on the arena screen. Its emergency contact was not the Barrett ranch. It was Elena’s missing father, Mateo Ruiz, declared dead twelve years earlier.
