Chapter 3 - The Bull Remembered Mateo

Elena had been told Mateo died after a trailer accident during a storm. Harrison now claimed the contact record was an old clerical error. Luis disagreed. Mateo had designed the ranch’s humane training program and organized stable workers after the Barretts withheld wages. “They called him dangerous because he asked why the rich boxes had champagne while workers had no health insurance,” Luis said. Elena approached the bull, which relaxed at the sound of Mateo’s whistle recorded on the file. Cole called the animal’s reaction meaningless. Elena answered, “He remembers the man your family erased.” Investigators opened a hidden storage room beneath the black pickup and found Mateo’s notebooks, employee contracts and a current photograph of him beside the same bull. On the back, Mateo had written: “Elena, never trust the handler in the white hat.” Everyone turned toward Luis.
