Chapter 8 - The Lie Elena Staged

Elena admitted cutting the sole before entering the arena. Mateo had warned her the crowd would ignore another speech, and she believed a visible failure would expose the ranch’s unsafe conditions. She never expected the bull to pass so close. Luis stared at her. “You risked your life and the animal’s reputation without telling us.” Elena lowered her head. “I wanted one moment they could not dismiss.” The worker board suspended her from training and required an independent safety review. Harrison laughed from federal custody. “Your heroine is no different from us.” Elena answered, “The difference is that I will not buy a judge to erase what I did.” Her honesty shifted public anger toward the system that made workers feel only spectacle could earn attention. Then the handler found a second cut inside the boot, deeper and newer than Elena’s. Someone had worsened her sabotage after she left the locker room.
