Chapter 4 - The Handler Who Chose Silence

Luis admitted helping Harrison hide Mateo after the labor dispute. Harrison threatened to report Luis’s undocumented brother and close worker housing if he refused. “I told myself keeping Mateo alive was better than exposing the truth,” Luis said. Elena’s anger sharpened. “You saved his breathing and stole twelve years from his daughter.” Luis led investigators to a private rehabilitation ranch in New Mexico. Mateo was found alive, weak but clear-minded, under another name. He revealed the Barretts had stolen a worker-owned breeding program worth millions. Stable hands accepted reduced wages in exchange for shares, but the family erased the agreement. Harrison called them employees, not owners. Mateo replied, “Your bloodline inherited our hunger.” Then he asked why Elena entered the arena. “Cole challenged me,” she said. Mateo whispered, “No. I sent the challenge from Cole’s phone.”
