Chapter 1 - The Falling Cake

The cake began leaning before Lily touched it.
She stood beside the dessert table in her white lace dress, holding a black smartphone and watching the weakened platform tilt away from her.
“Dad—”
The two-tier cake slid onto the polished floor.
White frosting and pink roses scattered across the dark wood.
Daniel turned before the guests finished gasping.
His face hardened when he saw Lily beside the ruined display.
“You ruined everything!”
His hand moved sharply, stopping before it reached her. Lily stumbled backward anyway, one hand rising to her cheek as though the anger had already landed.
“I didn’t do it!”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I saw Vanessa.”
Vanessa stepped from the other side of the table in her black one-shoulder gown.
“What are you talking about?”
Lily raised the phone.
“I recorded her.”
The video showed Vanessa entering the empty room earlier that morning. She looked around, crouched beside the cake platform and loosened two support fasteners before walking away.
Every detail matched.
The dress.
The room.
The pink roses.
Vanessa’s confidence vanished.
“Daniel, I can explain.”
He moved between her and the exit without touching her.
“Why would you frame a child?”
Vanessa clutched her small black purse against her body.
A phone rang inside it.
Lily froze.
“That’s my mom’s phone.”
Daniel stared at the purse.
Emma had died eighteen months earlier.
Her phone supposedly disappeared from the hospital the night she passed away.
Vanessa slowly opened the clutch.
The device was inside.
Still charged.
Still receiving calls.
Daniel’s voice became quieter than his anger.
“Why do you have my late wife’s phone?”
May you like
Vanessa looked toward the wealthy guests gathered beside the pool.
“Because Lily was never supposed to find the video.”
