Chapter 9 - Daniel’s Voice

Daniel had never touched Emma’s phone after the hospital.
The security log said otherwise.
His voice authorized every false message, guardianship file and property-transfer attachment.
The recordings sounded perfect.
“Approve Emma profile.”
“Send family petition.”
“Release housing proxy.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“You helped us.”
“No.”
Margaret looked uncertain.
“The commands came from your office.”
Daniel turned toward the mansion.
His private study was visible through the glass doors.
The office terminal had been active while he stood beside the pool.
Claire compared the recordings.
The breathing pattern changed between words.
Background sounds repeated unnaturally.
Someone had built the commands from Daniel’s speeches, investor calls and proposal rehearsals.
His voice had been cloned.
The system accepted it because Whitmore executives used private shortcuts unavailable to ordinary employees.
A hotel worker required a password, security card and supervisor approval to adjust payroll.
A family executive could transfer millions by speaking into a phone.
Daniel had approved that convenience years earlier.
Claire looked at him.
“You built a system that trusted your voice more than living witnesses.”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
The worker board suspended all voice-only authorizations.
No trust decision could proceed without approval from employee representatives and independent counsel.
Daniel’s technology company would fund the audit from executive equity.
Not from the housing reserve.
The examiner traced the cloned commands to Daniel’s private study.
Only three people had physical access.
Daniel.
Margaret.
And the family’s chief attorney, Charles Vale.
Charles had left the party seconds after Lily raised her phone.
Vanessa looked toward the driveway.
“He told me to loosen the cake platform.”
Daniel faced her.
“You said you planned it.”
“I did.”
Her voice broke.
“But he chose the day.”
Being instructed did not erase her choice.
It revealed the final layer.
Charles had promised Vanessa the development fee.
Promised Margaret temporary control.
And prepared Daniel to appear unfit as Lily’s guardian.
Everyone was being removed at once.
Then Emma’s phone rang again.

The incoming call displayed Daniel’s private number.
Daniel was standing beside them.
